Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum

The Visvesvaraya Technological University was founded in 1988 by the Karnataka Government in order to ensure quality technical education in the state. Named after the famed technocrat Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya, the University is located at Jnana Sagama, Belgaum, Karnataka. The university is the centre of technical education in the state since it is mandatory for all engineering colleges to be affiliated to it.

The University has grown tremendously since its inception. Today, it is regarded as one of the biggest universities in the country with the student intake standing at a staggering 67,100 undergraduate and 12,666 postgraduate students. Over the years, the university has also grown physically. Other than the 115-acre main campus at Belgaum, the Visvesvaraya Technological University has also opened regional centres at Gulbarga, Mysore and Bangalore. The university is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

What Does VTU Offer?

The Visvesvaraya Technological University has 208 colleges affiliated to it and offers 30 undergraduate courses to aspiring students. Its colleges together run 71 post-graduate courses. The various undergraduate courses include a Bachelor of Architecture and B Tech courses in automobile, bio-technology, civil, chemical, computer science, electrical and electronics, industrial and production, biomedical, instrumentation, mechanical, mechatronics and silk and textile engineering.

The M Tech courses offered by the university include Civil, Chemical, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, IP, IT, Mechanical and Textile engineering. The university also offers MBA and MCA post graduate degrees. Admission to the courses is based on the results of their entrance exams. The university will soon be running its first college, the Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology. It will focus on research in the fields of embedded technology, bio engineering, agricultural engineering and software quality.

Research and Grants At VTU

The university is research-centric and has set up 2305 research centres in its colleges. Some of the areas where research is funded include biotechnology, engineering sciences, general sciences, mathematics, physics and business administration. There is also a lot of public-private participation, and the university has signed MoUs with several industrial houses to set up centres of excellence. This has also helped to ensure better interaction between the industry and the students as well as faculty of the university.

The Who’s Who of Visvesvaraya Technological University

The university is headed by the Chancellor, a position that is occupied by the Governor of Karnataka. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university is Dr. V.S. Acharya, while the Vice-Chancellor is Dr. S. Maheshappa.
