The St. Joseph’sEngineering College was established in the year 2002 and officially inaugurated on the 19th March 2003, by Cardinal Ivan Dias of Mumbai. The inaugural session was presided over by the Archbishop of Bangalore, Dr.Ignatius Pinto.
St. Joseph’s Engineering College is affiliated to the Visveswaraiah Technological University in Belgaum and has been approved by the AICTE, New Delhi and the Karnataka State Government. It is located in region of Vamanjoor, which lies 10 kilometers to the east of Mangalore in Karnataka. The campus is spread over an area of more than 25 acres. There are several local buses that ply between the city center and the campus every 15 minutes along the National Highway.
The St. Joseph’s Engineering College happens to be the only catholic based engineering college in Karnataka under the guidance of the Catholic Diocese of Mangalore.

The college also provides several facilities and amenities to its students for extracurricular development. The college has several clubs like NSS, Human Rights Club, Youth Red Cross, and the AICUF that sees a lot of students participating actively. It has an Entrepreneurship Development Cell that encourages student start-ups and ventures. There are separate hostels for both boys and girls and separate canteens for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food-lovers. The College library has a large and varied collection of books and journals, along with a photocopy center, stationery shop, bank with ATM, and a dispensary. The college has sports facilities like a 400 meters athletic track, fields for cricket, basketball, football, hockey, and two courts for badminton. 6 college buses ply between the campus and several points in the city of Mangalore.
Research and Grants
The college has an Entrepreneurship Development Cell that encourages student ventures and start-ups. It offers the M.Sc. (Engg) by Research in Mechanical Engineering along with Post-Doctoral programs specializing in Physics, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering. The College has the SJEC Scholarship program that awards meritorious students to experience everything that the college has to offer.
The Who’s Who of SJEC
The Director of the institute is Rev.Fr. Valerian D’Souza who has taken it as his duty to personally supervise the proceedings of the campus. He is assisted by Rev. Fr. Henry Mascarenhas, the Assistant Director. Other members of the management include the Principal, Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis; Dean (Academic), Prof. A. Jayakara Hegde and Dean (Planning), Prof. Eric Patrao.
