Rani Jhari, a hidden gem near Chikmagalur, is a viewpoint offering spellbinding views. It is 21 km from Kalasa in the Durgada Halli village and about 70 km from Chikmagalur in Karnataka. Not well known, like the Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri peaks in the Chikmagalur region, Rani Jhari Edge Point is an unexplored trekking point. Hence, it attracts trekkers and nature lovers alike.

History of Rani Jhari Edge Point

As per the local people, the peak assumes its name after Rani Padmini Devi, who leapt from there to escape Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Henceforth, it came to be called the Rani Jhari (Queen Fall) viewpoint.

Rani Jhari Edge Point Trek

The Rani Jhari Edge Point trek starts at the Kalabhairaveshwara Temple in Durgada Halli and ends at the Rani Jhari peak. You could take your vehicle to a certain point where you can begin the trek. The trekking trail distance of Rani Jhari Edge Point is around 1.5 km, and it takes about half an hour to 45 minutes to reach the viewpoint. Lush green environs welcome one as one trek towards the peak. Sighting of various birds, view of tea, coffee and rubber estates, and open grasslands delight one all along the trail. The trail also has steep cuts and narrow pathways, so one must be careful. Hence it is advisable to go in a group to support each other at these points. 

The viewpoint, just a few metres from the Gatikallu viewpoint, undeniably offers stunning views of the Kudremukh National Park, Ballalarayana Durga Fort, Gatikallu viewpoint, surrounding peaks, valleys and grasslands. The Rani Jhari viewpoint, a photographer’s delight, also offers breathtaking sunset views.

From Bangalore, tourists can take the Bangalore – Mangalore National Highway, which takes one via Kunigal, Hassan and then to Mudigere, which is 40 km from Rani Jhari.
