Halasi is an ancient town that lies 25 kilometers away from Kittur, in the Belgaum district of Karnataka. It is famous for its many temples – Jain, Shaivite and Vaishnavite.
Jaina Temple – Overview
Several inscriptions excavated around Halasi refer to a Jain temple here that received several grants from Kadamba kings. The current Jain Temple that stands in the region is not older than the 10th century.
Jaina Temple – History
Halasi and Devagiri copperplates refer to grants made to Jain saints and temples. Grants of land and whole villages were made to Jain temples for conducting daily rituals and for their maintenance. Mrigesavarma’s inscription states that he built a Jinalaya in honor and memory of his father Palasika. He also made grants to several Jain Sanghas.
The Gudnapur inscription states that King Ravivarma built a Jain temple for Manmatha- an interesting tradition. There is some dispute as to who this Manmatha is. Dr. B.R. Gopal believes that the name refers to Bahubali, who was called Manmatha. However, Dr. A Sundara has discovered statues of Rati and Manmatha at the site of this temple. Dr. A. Sundara has also uncovered some ancient structures, with brick walls. He believes that this is what remains of the Jain temple built during the Kadamba period.
