Elections decide who will be an MP, an MLA and a Corporator. Each of these roles comes with different responsibilities. Responsibilities Of Elected Representatives In Bangalore – The Role Of An MP

An MP is a Member of Parliament. MPs are responsible for making laws the country is run by. They can design programs and supervise them but have no role in the implementation of these programs.

Thus, it wouldn’t be right to say that an MP isn’t doing his job if a mid-day meal program in schools serves children with poor quality food. Though MPS represent the citizens of their constituency, they cannot be held responsible for civic issues.

There are a total of 545 MPs in the Indian Parliament. Of these, 28 are from Karnataka. Bengaluru is represented by 4 MPs. These are representative of North, Central, South and Rural Bengaluru. The current MPs from Bengaluru are:

  • North Bengaluru: D. V. Sadananda Gowda
  • Central Bengaluru: P.C. Mohan
  • South Bengaluru: Tejasvi Surya
  • Rural Bengaluru: D.K. Suresh

Responsibilities Of Elected Representatives In Bangalore – The Role of an MLA

An MLA is a Member of the Legislative Assembly. Each state has its own Legislative Assembly that makes state laws and regulations. Like MPS, they can supervise government programs but cannot play a role in the implementation of these programs. They too cannot be held responsible for civic issues.

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly has 224 MLAs. Of these, 28 are from Bengaluru. Each constituency in Bengaluru, i.e., North, Central, South and Rural Bengaluru is divided into 7-8 assembly constituencies. Thus, each MLA represents one assembly constituency which can comprise of 4-5 lakhs of people.

Responsibilities Of Elected Representatives In Bangalore – What A Corporator Can Do For You

Bengaluru is managed and governed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The BBMP is divided into 198 wards. Each ward is headed by an elected representative known as a corporator. Each corporator may be responsible for anywhere between 40,000 and 70,000 people.

The BBMP is responsible for all civic issues pertaining to the Bengaluru. This includes the management of roads, lakes, parks and all public spaces as well as garbage management and tax collection.

They are also responsible for issuing permissions for the construction of new schools, etc. However, corporators of the BBMP are not responsible for the functioning of the BMRCL, BMTC, BWSSB and BESCOM.
