    • CM plans to end auto-cracy, bans permits for new autos
Here's some good news for the city. Karnataka chief minister on Saturday announced a ban on permits for new autorickshaws in the city. The ban, which is part of the CM's plan to decongest the city roads, will also reduce the increasing number of three-wheelers in Bangalore and help ease the traffic flow.

"Many felt that new autos should not be given permits, so we've decided to go ahead with the ban," the CM told reporters on the concluding day of Manthana-2, a meeting with officials and ministers. Autorickshaw unions, however, are not very happy with the move. "We will submit a memorandum to the chief minister and discuss the issue with him. If they go ahead with the order, we will go on a protest," state president of Adarsh Auto and Taxi Drivers Union M Manjunath told Sunday DNA. The autorickshaw union said the move will hit the citizens hard because the "demand for rickshaws in Bangalore is very high."

    • Why is BSY govt so keen on moving Bangalore Turf Club?
That successive state governments through decades have tried to get the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) to move out of its current location to the outskirts, is well-documented. The question is, why is B S Yeddyurappa so keen on enforcing the year-end deadline, when even paper work has not been initiated in getting BTC a new race course? International racing consultant Finn Powrie says it takes more than two-and-half years to build a course of international standards, with a minimum cost of Rs 300 crore on about 100 acres of land.

Linked is the question, `What does the government intend to do with 60 acres of prime property within walking distance of Vidhana Soudha?' Bangaloreans would love for it to be converted into a public park, a green space so that the growing city gets some additional lung space that it so sorely needs. Prominent city citizens have already said so.
