State Governments have been trying to get the "Metropolitan City" status for Bangalore. In simple terms Metropolitan city can be defined as "A large population centre consisting of a large city and its adjacent zone of influence, or of several neighbouring cities or towns and adjoining areas with one or more large city serving as its hub."

By getting this status Bangalore will be eligible for more funds from the centre.

    • 36-acre Defence land sought for road widening

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has requested Defence Minister A K Antony to transfer defence land running into 36.3 acres to the State for construction and widening work in the City.

In an open letter to the Defence Minister, copies of which were made available to the press, he said that to decongest traffic, BBMP planned to take up construction and widening of many roads and bridges and put in place a mammoth storm water drain to clear rainwater. “These projects are essential for smooth flow of traffic and development of City,” the letter stressed. Some stretches of land required for the purpose fell under defence property, it said.

    • Owners challenge acquisition of sites for BMIC
The high court ordered notices to the urban development department, Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Boards, Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Area Planning Authority and Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises, based on a petition filed by V R Ramesh Babu and others. They challenged the acquisition of their sites near Gottigere for the Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project.

The petitioners, who challenged the land acquisition in 1998 and 2003, have sought alternative sites with similar dimensions in the proposed 1,000-acre township to be developed by NICE at Bidadi, if their land was to be finally acquired.
