To improve the reach of Metro in Bangalore, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) proposes to extend metro rail services to the outskirts of Bangalore. The Comprehensive Transport and Traffic Plan (CTTP) is awaiting final approval for the extension of metro corridors beyond the currently-planned terminals (as shown in the table above). This means an additional 8 km is planned to the existing 33 km stretch.

The Byappanahalli terminal wil extend till Whitefield, those at Yeshwanthpur and Mysore Road will reach up to Yelahanka and the proposed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) near Kanakapura Road respectively. There is a plan to extend the RV Road metro terminal up to the PRR.

Basically the route will be exended upto,

  • Hesarghatta Cross on the East (5.6 km,cost of Rs 900 crore)
  • Banashankar II Stage on the West (2.5 km)
  • K R Puram on the South
  • Nayandahalli on the North

In view of the route extension the ridership will increase from the proposed 1 million to 1.15 million "per day".  Earlier Phase 1 was planned over 33 km across two corridors (N-S of 14.9 kms and E-W of 18.1 kms) with 32 stops. Now, it will be 36 stops with the extended rail length of 8 km. Each additional kilometre will cost BMRC Rs 150 crore, apart from land acquisition costs.

The Reach One of Phase I between MG Road and Byappanahalli will be commissioned by March 2010 and the entire Phase I will be opened by December 2011.
