    • Karnataka Cabinet clears Rs 27,000 cr for Bangalore metro phase-II

      Karnataka government gave its green signal to take up second phase of Bangalore metro project of 72 kms at an investment of about Rs 27,000 crore. Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the second phase is planned to be completed by 2017.

      There is no place for rumours now.The first phase of the Metro project is on track and the first lane will most probably be inaugurated as per schedule,in December 2010,said BMRCL MD N Sivasailam.

      With a certain amount of confidence I say that the Byappanahalli-MG Road Metro sector will be operational by the end of this year, he said. Speaking at the Earth Hour awareness programme at ING Vysya auditorium,Sivasailam assured the crowd that nature-friendly technology is being used for the Metro project.

  • Metro in Cubbon Park: HC asks for eco-impact report

    The high court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on Namma Metro work in Cubbon Park to Friday, asking for a copy of the Environmental impact Assessment Study report during the next hearing on Friday. It was with regard to the miscellaneous petition filed by the horticulture department, seeking the court's permission to start felling trees in Cubbon Park.

    The division bench, headed by Justice V Gopala Gowda, adjourned the hearing after the counsel representing the petitioners in the 1998 PIL sought time. The horticulture department has stated that the BMRCL requires 11,160.86 sqm area temporarily, and 2,126.71 sqm area permanently, to house the Vidhana Soudha underground station and ancillary buildings.

  • Mono rail gets moving
    The long-pending mono rail project seems to be getting on track. The infrastructure department placed the project before the ABIDe task force members on Wednesday for discussion.

    The 60-km feeder network is being planned on the Swiss Challenge method and two firms have evinced interest. However, no decision has been taken.

    Close on the heels of the recent spate of mishaps at the Metro work sites in New Delhi, the urban development department at the Centre has directed all upcoming Metro projects in the country, including Namma Metro, to hold orientation programmes for its workers. This is being done to ensure that accidents in the project areas are done away with.
  • Key Metro safety data hidden from public
    What happened in Delhi could happen here too. The Delhi Metro Rail mishap that killed six workers on Sunday has raised serious doubts about whether the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has conducted fool-proof safety tests on the Metro rail project.

    The BMRCL, which says it has conducted the tests, claims it has kept these away from the public domain but experts doubt the claim.As per 2004 norms of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), it is mandatory for agencies and contractors constructing high-rise buildings or elevated structures, as in the metro rail project, to conduct wind analysis and seismic tests.

  • Bangalore Metro pace won't be hit
    The BMRC has ruled out any delay in the Bangalore Metro work following the Delhi accident which involved a pier cap along the curved track. Incidentally, in a fortnight, the first curved section of the Bangalore Metro will come up at Brigade Road-MG Road junction.

    The Oct 2008 accident in Delhi had triggered a recheck delaying the Bangalore work by month. BMRC MD N Sivasailam however says there will be no such delay this time. "We are confident of our designs. But forewarned is forearmed. We will have a quick recheck of our calculations and again test our loading patterns and launching techniques for the curved stretches," he told The Times of India

  • Namma Metro: don't demolish buildings
    A division Bench of the high court has ordered status quo with regard to some buildings in Basavanagudi, acquired for the
    Namma Metro project for locating South End station.

    "Don't demolish them," the court told the BMRC advocate orally before adjourning hearing on a writ appeal filed by Zakirunnisa and others. The latter alleged there's a shift of 103 metres towards Lalbagh side.

  • Million passengers for Namma Metro

Namma metro plans to ferry 10.21 lakh passengers by 2010. BMRCL, project once completed expects to reduce the traffic by 7-18lakhs.  Also opines that mass rapid transport is a must for a growing city like Bangalore.

Once lauched, Bangalore Metro is expected to reduce nearly 8lakh automobiles in the city according to Uday Holla, the advocate general, high court.

Wall collapses during Namma Metro Demolition killing Prakash(aged 24), a Labourer from Kollegal on the spot. This has been the thrid fatal accident in the past one year with Metro construction.

Namma Metro construction work has been postponed by 12 days due to the protests raised by the public and environmentalists. About  1135 sq meters of Lalbagh has been acquired to construct the emergency staircase and escalators for passengers to board and land from the station. About 18 trees will be felled for the same reason. BMRCL has assured that the work will be according to Union and State Government approvals and acquision will be done purely for public convinience.

Meanwhile, green campaigners continue to protest against the move....

Metro construction is fast progressing owing to the felling of trees at Lalbagh and RV Road.  Hasiru Usiru, a green movement campaigners, plan to organise human chain protesting the cutting of trees. Chief Engineer of Namma Metro, RR Doddihal assured that only permitted trees will be cut.

Namma Metro Project will plan the tunneling in July. The tunnel path needs to be found, creating a restricted zone. Borewells and wells, belonging to both Government and private need to be closed at restricted zone.
Tenders have been finalised for the ground work and closure of wells in restricted zone. The process is monitored as per the recommendations of the mines and geology department.
