- Metro in Cubbon Park: HC asks for eco-impact report
The high court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on Namma Metro work in Cubbon Park to Friday, asking for a copy of the Environmental impact Assessment Study report during the next hearing on Friday. It was with regard to the miscellaneous petition filed by the horticulture department, seeking the court's permission to start felling trees in Cubbon Park.
The division bench, headed by Justice V Gopala Gowda, adjourned the hearing after the counsel representing the petitioners in the 1998 PIL sought time. The horticulture department has stated that the BMRCL requires 11,160.86 sqm area temporarily, and 2,126.71 sqm area permanently, to house the Vidhana Soudha underground station and ancillary buildings.

About 18 trees will be felled for the same reason. BMRCL has assured that the work will be according to Union and State Government approvals and acquision will be done purely for public convinience.

Metro construction is fast progressing owing to the felling of trees at Lalbagh and RV Road. Hasiru Usiru, a green movement campaigners, plan to organise human chain protesting the cutting of trees. Chief Engineer of Namma Metro, RR Doddihal assured that only permitted trees will be cut.
Namma Metro Project will plan the tunneling in July. The tunnel path needs to be found, creating a restricted zone. Borewells and wells, belonging to both Government and private need to be closed at restricted zone.
Tenders have been finalised for the ground work and closure of wells in restricted zone. The process is monitored as per the recommendations of the mines and geology department.

CMH Road, a critical location on the Namma Metro route map, sported a new bustle on Monday as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) commenced work on the stretch. The central portion was being barricaded through the day, monitored by BMRC officials.
Barricading will take place in phases between BM Shree Circle and Adarsha junction. Once the barricades are in place, traffic will be shut out of 9.5 metres of road space (4.75 metres on either side of the central point). Basaveshwara Rao, project manager of Navayuga Engineering, the contractor executing the work, said barricading work would continue through the night. By evening, the action was concentrated near the CMH Road--Double Road intersection.

Ltd faces.Executives at the corporation say that while they think they can complete the project by 31 December 2011, lawsuits could make them miss the deadline. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation on Wednesday began shifting of utility lines at Indiranagar for the metro rail project under police protection. Low-tension power lines at Indiranagar 100-Feet Road-Old Madras Road junction were shifted by BMRCL officials in co-operation with Bangalore Electricity Supply Company. Interestingly, there was no resistance from shop owners on CMH Road, who do not want the metro rail to pass through the road. “We had no problem carrying out the work. Police protection was sought as a precautionary measure. Work on shifting utility lines on CMH will also be taken up shortly,” BMRCL Superintending Engineer (Electrical) Yeshwanth Chavan told Deccan Herald.

Nine general consultants are in the race to bag the contract for developing the design and constructing the Bangalore Metro Rail. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) is scrutinising the documents submitted by the nine consultants, including one by Rail India Tecno and Economic Services (RITES).

Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy today said the Centre had not granted Custom Duty exemption on the import of equipment for execution of the Bangalore Metro project but it would be getting a 'subordinate debt' to offset the losses suffered because of denial of duty exemption.
