Bangalore International Airport News
- You can get info on BIAL under RTI
In a landmark verdict passed by the Karnataka Information Commission (KIC), the consortium company of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has been deemed as a 'public authority'.
Dwelling into the financial structure and funding patterns of BIAL, the commission found that the private-public consortia has been 'substantially financed' by the government of India under the Comptroller and Auditor General (Duties, Powers and Conditions of Services) Act 1971, or CAG Act, thus making it (BIAL) more a public enterprise than a private one.
- New Bangalore airport to open soon
Amid indications that no civilian flights will be allowed at Bangalore's HAL airport, government on Monday said the new international airport will open by the end of this month and operator's licence will be issued to it in the next 2-3 days.
This emerged after a meeting convened by the Civil Aviation Ministry in which top officials of the Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) as well as those from the Karnataka government participated.

- No takers for pomelo cultivation near BIA
The world over, it is used in exotic cooking, for Thai desserts and in jams and jellies. The pomelo fruit, known as chakkota locally, is facing near extinction in and around Bangalore, thanks partly to the Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli which has sent land prices sky-rocketing.
Property prices along the Devanahalli route are heading north every passing day. Happy farmers are only too willing to sell off their agricultural land. This has dealt a severe blow to the cultivation of the fruit in the region.
- What next for Bangalore HAL airport?
The high court on Wednesday asked the Centre what it proposes to do with the HAL Airport after the new airport commences operations.
"We will not come in the way of Bengaluru International Airport coming into existence. But we want to know what you (Centre) want to do with the old airport in the light of the Parliamentary panel's recommendations. We also want to know about the technical aspects of the city having two operating airports,"a division Bench headed by Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph told ASG Arvind Kumar before adjourning the hearing to Thursday.
- As suspected, Airport will be operational only after elections
Polls could be the spoiler this time. As the Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli dresses itself up for the revised inauguration date of May 11, uncertainty hangs threateningly low. With assembly elections likely to be held in May, the code of conduct for political parties could kick in anytime soon, either delaying the airport inauguration or stripping the event of its pomp. According to top civil aviation ministry officials, under the electoral code of conduct, BIA would be allowed to have an informal opening minus the gala function. This clearly forbids any politician from participating in the inauguration. Top Karnataka government officials confirmed this. Senior BIAL officials told STOI the assessment of whether there's to be a function or not will be based on the "collective decision" taken by BIAL and the civil aviation ministry.
- Headed for BIA? Watch out for snakes
The dog-hit at HAL Airport should serve as a wake-up call for Bangalore International Airport Limited, as the surroundings of Devanahalli, where the new airport is situated, are home to many dangerous animals and reptiles.
An environment assessment report on flora and fauna of Devanahalli, prepared by the Indian Institute of Science in mid-2007, says jackals, pangolins, snakes, monitor lizards, jungle cats, mongooses and a variety of avi-fauna live in and around Devanahalli. - BMTC to make drive to airport easy
The BMTC is doing its bit to make the drive to the international airport more comfortable — it will start a Vayu Vajra fleet of Volvo buses between various points in the city and the airport. Operation will begin after the airport opens. "We will get delivery of 40 buses on Wednesday. The governor's adviser, P K H Tharakan, will inaugurate the service on March 30,’’ BMTC MD Upendra Tripathy said on Tuesday. The officials expressed on Monday meeting that AAI might need more time to complete the installation of the Air Traffic Control equipment and training of air traffic controllers to handle the systems.
- Bangalore International Airport to be delayed
The opening of the Devanahalli international airport is almost certain to be put off, with the Civil Aviation Ministry taking a dim view of the airports preparedness to begin commercial operations.
This view was understood to have emerged at a meeting chaired by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Monday. Ministry Secretary Ashok Chawla also participated in the meeting. This will be followed up by another official-level meeting in the next couple of days. The ministry decided to await the report from the Airports Authority of India on the “preparedness of the airport" and another from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation — the airport licensing authority — before taking a final decision.
- Bangalore needs HAL airport
With less than three weeks to go for the commissioning of the Bengaluru International Airport, the clamour has grown louder for retention of the HAL airport for short-haul flights, at least until the access to the new airport is smoother. Political leaders, cutting across party lines, have joined the chorus. Sitaram Yechury of CPM, who headed the parliamentary standing committee looking into the issue, said: “Given the fact that in both Hyderabad and Bangalore, capacity has saturated there is no reason for the Centre to close existing airports. The government should renegotiate the deal with promoters of new airports. As the PIL on the closure of Hyderabad airport is coming up on April 4, the government should not rush to close this airport by March 15.’’
- Grounded at the word go
In the next few weeks, Bangalore will see the unveiling of a new international airport. Billed as India’s first greenfield public-private partnership (PPP) airport, this is a project that has gone through all the challenges an innovator faces. Construction began on 2 July 2005, marking the end of a tortuous process that began in 2001, with the final concession agreement being signed in 2004. During this period, the project was buffeted by the political currents of changing governments at the Centre and in the state. Governments everywhere learnt a lot about the challenges of doing airport privatization from the Bangalore experience.
- Short-haul flyers shun new airport
Fears are coming true. The new Bengaluru International Airport appears to be putting off travellers flying on short-haul routes — those that have a flight time between 30 minutes and an hour. Reason: the airport is around 40 km from the city and the accessibility is poor. Most are dreading the commute to and from the airport and the expense involved. - Twin airports will be disastrous
Defending the Bangalore International Airport Limited’s (BIAL) stand to shut down commercial operations at the HAL Airport after the Bengaluru International Airport opens on March 30, BIAL CEO, Albert Brunner said that operating two airports simultaneously would be disastrous.
Replying to a query on the PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court on the retention of the HAL airport he said, “ To operate two airports on a long term basis is a bad solution and would also be disastrous for the airline operators, passengers and for the over all business activity. Cities which have dual airports like Hong Kong and Munich have turned out to be a disasters and the airports have never grown.
- Devanahalli airport may fuel economy travel
Heres one reason why air passengers might feel that the Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli could be cheaper when compared to the GMR promoted Hyderabad international airport.
The fuel throughput fee fixed for aircraft at the Bengaluru airport is only Rs 700 per kilo litre of aviation fuel. This is not only a lot lesser than that to be levied for the Hyderabad airport, but also considerably lower than in most existing airports of the country, barring New Delhi and Mumbai.
