- IT, BT & Nano Tech Authority soon: Yeddyurappa
The government of Karnataka will set up a separate authority which will act as a single-window agency to ensure speedy growth of IT, BT and Nano technology, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said on Wednesday, Aug 20.Readily accepting to the suggestion by Infosys Technologies' Chairman N R Narayana Murthy to this effect, the Chief Minister said the government would seriously work towards setting up such an authority. He was speaking at the launch of the nation's flagship annual IT event 'Bangalore IT Biz' which will be held for three days from November 6. It is being organised for 11th year in succession. Bangalore IT Biz is the new avatar of Bangalore IT which has been attracting world's top IT companies in its previous editions.
- 'Bengalooru' to be 'Bengaluru' soon
Now Bangaloreans need to get used to the spelling of 'Bengalooru' as 'Bengaluru'. The Bangalore High Court on Tuesday, Aug 19 has ordered a copy of the petition seeking directions to spell as ‘Bengaluru' instead of ‘Bengalooru'. The petition will be served to the governrnent.K N Srinivas and others, in their petition, said that it should be spelt as 'Bengaluru' instead of the present spellings. On the occasion of Suvarana Karnataka celebrations, the state government on November 1, 2007 proposed the change in the names of Mysore, Bangalore, Mangalore and other cities.
- Karnataka to pitch Bangalore as nanotechnology hub
Tech-savvy Karnataka is set to promote Bangalore as a nanotechnology hub to replicate its success in information technology (IT) and biotechnology (BT) sectors, with novel initiatives to attract investors, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, a top official said."We have initiated a number of measures to accelerate the growth of the nanotechnology sector on the lines of IT and BT sectors. Efforts are on to replicate the success in IT and BT sectors in terms of innovation, investment and job creation," Karnataka secretary for IT, BT and science and technology Ashok Kumar C. Manoli said late Wednesday.

UB CITY-The Collection, the country's largest and first luxury retail outlet will come up at the UB City, the noted landmark in the city built by Vijay Mallya owned UB Group.According to Irfan Razak, CMD of Presgite Group, which jointly developed the skyscraper with the UB Group said the luxury retail market, which was still at the nascent stage in India and the unveiling of 'UB City - The Collection' would open a new vista into the sector.

Bangalore will become the first railway station to be equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity by August, Rail Tel Corporation of India Ltd MD, K K Bajpeyee, said today. The row over chief minister H D Kumaraswamy's pet programme Janapada Jathre (folk fair) is set to boil over even as the matter is expected to be discussed in the cabinet on Monday.Kannada and culture minister H S Mahadev Prasad has ordered the Jathre to be halted to "restructure it and reduce expenditure." But the minister has taken exception to Jathre convener Sreenivas G Kappanna going to the media stating that "no reason has been attributed" for stopping the popular event.

The long-pending passenger train service on the Mangalore-Hassan-Bangalore route via Arasikere is all set to become a reality soon. Guage conversion work of the 55 km stretch between Sakleshpur and Subramanya Road, which come under the picturesque Western Ghats section, had been pending for long, thus delaying the Bangalore-Mangalore train service. Once the section is opened for passenger trains, services can run from Bangalore to Mangalore via Arasikere and Mysore to Mangalore via Hassan. - Bangalore 4th cleanest city among 18 state capitals
IT hub Bangalore ranks the fourth cleanest city among 18 State Capitals, according to a Lifebuoy Cleanliness Survey.The city ranked fourth with a score of 108, as against the all-city average of 100. The areas where the city have done well were clean roads, efficient garbage disposal system and greenery and plantations, a release here said today.

City's schoolchildren will guard all entrance points of Lalbagh to check the bags of visitors and replace the plastic ones with cloth bags.The students will also perform street plays and even help in cleaning the garden. The much awaited train service between Mangalore and Bangalore will commence from January next, Southern Railway General Manager Triloknath Patty said today. Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will formally inaugurate the four-lane Mysore-Bangalore highway from this end tomorrow. The 134-km stretch, which had been upgraded into a four-lane highway, would ensure a hassle-free, smooth ride for passengers in just two hours. Work on upgrading the Srirangapatna-Mysore stretch of the highway into a six-lane road would commence tomorrow at a cost of Rs 18 crore. Notwithstanding the delay in its implementation, Bangalore will be the first city in the country to be fully WiMax-enabled, offering wireless broadband service covering 743 square km of the city by the year-end.Disclosing this at the curtain raiser press conference for the upcoming IT mega event 'BangaloreIT.in-2007', Karnataka IT and BT Secretary M N Vidyashankar said 70 per cent of the fixed base stations had been set up after the Government identified the bidder.
