    Mysore palace of Karnataka grabbed one rank in the list of 31 "Must Visit" places by New York Times. What surprises many is - Taj Mahal, which is one of the seven wonders of the world, failed to grab a place in the list.

    The city of palaces, Mysore has been ranked fourth in the New York Times' '31 Places to Go in 2010' list.

    Placed after Sri Lanka, Patagonia Wine Country, and Seoul, Mysore has been deemed as the place to be for those interested in learning and practising Yoga.

  • Jumbos begin journey to Mysore
    At a function organised in Veeranahosalli village near Nagarhole National Park, in Hunsur taluk of Mysore district, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and District-In-Charge Minister Shobha Karandlaje offered pooja to five pachyderms at a special arch put up near the entrance of the village. The caparisoned elephants started their journey in trucks. Mahouts, in their traditional attire, are also accompanying these elephants to Mysore.
    The tradition of welcoming the Dasara elephants at Veeranahosahalli was started five to six years ago by then district-in-charge Minister H Vishwanath. Since then, it has become a regular affair to accord a welcome to those pachyderms at the village before  they embark on their visit to Mysore.

    Mysore city authorities have a proposal for farmers who own land in and around the city: Part with your plot for nothing and get 18% of it back after it is developed and potentially more valuable.The Mysore Urban Development Authority (Muda) thinks it’s offering a good deal to farmers as it competes with private developers for land to build public housing in a city where property prices have doubled in 18 months. Whether the offer will find takers is in some doubt.
  • Terror threat: Hi-tech security for Mysore Palace
    A hi-tech security system would be in place at the world famous Mysore Palace in the wake of increased terror threat following bomb blasts in major cities across the country in the last few months.

    The Mysore Palace Board has decided to set up a Hi-Tech security system at four gates through which tourists enter the palace. Palace Board sources told UNI here that an underground Three- Dimensional Scanner, X-ray Security screening System and High Resolution Surveillance camaras would be part of the 'foolproof' security system. The palace, which has a caretaker, has called for response from competent agencies to set up the security system. The Board is also seeking suggestions from the police and other agencies, the sources said.

    Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the erstwhile ruler of Mysore, has submitted before the Supreme Court that discussion is on with the Karnataka government to sort out the contentious issue of renting out the Bangalore Palace for commercial events.

    Information pertaining to the Dasara festival from October 12 to 21 was expected to be posted on the Website in eight International languages.

    In a bid to woo tourists from across the world and to festival make the event truly Global, the district authorities were planning to provide information about the festival in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Arabic, apart from Kannada, Hindi and English.

  • Preparations for Dasara 2007 on in full swing
    The preparations for the famous Mysore Dasara festivities would commence from September six with the district administration bringing elephants from the Veerahoshalli camp in Nagarahole National Park, District In-charge Minister G T Deve Gowda said. Talking to newspersons yesterday after the official level meeting of Dasara Festival Committee, he said as per the traditional process the administration would welcome the first batch of six elephants with a traditional 'puja'. The pachyderms would arrive here on September nine. The officials had been asked to enlist the programmes for the conduct of Dasara festivities in advance and kep everything ready for inauguration on October 12, he said.
  • Mysore Airport to be ready by October 2009
    Mysore Airport will be ready for operation by October 2009, Union Ministry of Civil Aviation Joint Secretary K N Srivatsava said today.

    Speaking to newsmen after inspecting the works at Mandakali Airport, near here, he said that the works were expected to be completed by January 2009 and after trail run and testing the runway it would be ready for operation by Dasara Festivities in 2009.

  • Work in swift pace for Mysore Airport upgradation
    This city of palaces, emerging a logical extension of Bangalore for IT sector expansion, will soon find its lost place in the aviation map of the country following the development of a full fledged Airport.

    Work on upgrading the airport at Mandakalli on the outskirts of the city has picked up steam following the urgency of it exhibited by the IT sector as the city had emerged the second in the State in IT exports, which had crossed Rs 760 crore last year.

  • Karnataka: Thalacauvery opened for pilgrims
    Thalacauvery was closed since April for renovation of the bathing pond and the Holy 'Kundike'.

    The delicate repair works were guided by the Neeleshwara Padmanabha Thanthri to Kushanlnagar's PG Construction Company workers. He followed the religious and traditional ways for the reconstruction with laterite stones and instructed the contractors to leave the sources of water from various regions, including the Brahmagiri Hills and Shri Agastyeshwara temple centre.

  • Chamundi Hills, Mysore Palace set to be developed
    Buoyed by the boom in tourism and growing popularity of Chamundi Hills and the famous Mysore palace, the Karnataka Government has taken up long term measures to promote tourism to cope with the projected influx of tourists in the coming years.

    A detailed project report (DPR) for the development of Chamundi Hills was ready and would be submitted to the Centre for approval. A similar exercise was in progress for the Mysore palace too. Both the projects would be taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), a Centrally-sponsored project in 63 cities across the country.

    A meeting of top officials and experts has decided to construct a memorial for Swami Vivekananda in the city at a cost of Rs five crore. The decision was taken at a meeting, convened by Lok Sabha member C H Vijayashankar at the Palace Board to review the development of heritage structures and temples in the district.

  • Mysore-Bangalore highway to be opened on Aug 31
    Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will formally inaugurate the four-lane Mysore-Bangalore highway from this end tomorrow. The 134-km stretch, which had been upgraded into a four-lane highway, would ensure a hassle-free, smooth ride for passengers in just two hours. Work on upgrading the Srirangapatna-Mysore stretch of the highway into a six-lane road would commence tomorrow at a cost of Rs 18 crore. It was expected to be completed in 15 months.

    Karnataka IT, BT and Science and Technology Principal Secretary Anup K Pujari today assured necessary help to project Mysore as the best destination for IT development.
