- Cap Gemini shares fall after denying Wipro talks
Europe’s largest computer services company, Cap Gemini SA, fell the most in four months in Paris trading after saying it isn’t in talks with India’s Wipro Ltd about a takeover.Cap Gemini dropped as much as €2.57 (Rs146), or 5.7%, to €42.43, the biggest decline since 16 August. It was trading at €43.58 at 12.05 pm in Paris.
- Infosys asks Centre to open up higher education sector
Citing constraint of talent in the country, IT major Infosys on Thursday asked the Centre to open up higher education sector, failing which India's growth would be affected.
"Infrastructure and capital are not the biggest constraints of India, but availability of talent," Infosys board member T V Mohandas Pai said on the sidelines of a conference. Infosys chief mentor N R Narayanamurthy has taken up the reform process in higher education sector to the Prime Minister, who has responded positively, Pai said.
- Indian IT firms hope to hold price levels steady, unlike 2001
Indian software vendors such as Infosys Technologies Ltd, Wipro Ltd and MindTree Consulting Ltd say they expect to maintain prices for customers in the US, the largest market for IT services, where a potential economic slowdown looms large.
These vendors say they are more mature now than during the 2001 meltdown, when firms lowered prices to retain or win customers.
Also, they expect to turn more aggressive in acquiring skills and assets, which may come cheap when, and if, the slowdown unfolds.
- Wipro moves focus to system integration biz
Departing from its earlier model of being a software services vendor, Wipro Ltd, India’s third largest software services company, is looking to earn nearly one-sixth of its global IT revenues by March 2009 from system integration (SI) business, or by providing hardware, software solutions and services.
The company currently earns 68% of its revenues from Wipro Technologies, its global IT services division, and will be the first large Indian software exporter to bid for big SI contracts, competing with players such as Electronic Data Systems Corp., Accenture Ltd and Capgemini SA.
- Wipro shares data on fake CVs with peers
Wipro Technologies has started sharing with competitors its database of job applicants who have faked information in their CVs, the first such initiative in the Indian IT industry. The database, containing the names of hundreds of individuals and recruitment agencies, is being made available to two of the top five domestic IT companies and efforts are on for a similar arrangement with many more, Pradeep Bahirwani, vice-president for strategic sourcing at Wipro Technologies, told ET. He declined to name the companies with which Wipro is cooperating. TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Satyam and HCL Technologies are India’s five biggest software exporters. The informal arrangement will involve the exchange and review of information on CV cheats, preventing lying job-seekers who have been caught in one organisation from joining another.
- US downturn could help Indian outsourcers: Wipro
A US economic downturn could give a boost to India's flagship outsourcing industry even though it is being hit by a rupee trading at near decade highs, says the head of leading Indian computer services provider Wipro. Shares of India's software services giants have slumped in the face of investor worries about the rupee's 12 percent ascent this year against the dollar, the currency in which the firms make most of their profits, and concern that a US economic slowdown might force US companies to cut IT budgets.

iGATE Global Solutions (iGATE), an integrated technology and operations (iTOPS) company, today announced signing of technology services agreement with the Union Bank of California (UBoC), the 25th largest Bank in the US based on assets.

Sources said Bharti Telesoft, the VAS arm of mobile telecom player Bharti Enterprises, has already entered into an initial agreement with Jataayu and an announcement is likely to be made shortly.

- Infosys to team up with Wipro, HP for local contracts
India’s second largest software services company, Infosys Technologies Ltd, will work with partners such as Wipro Infotech, the local unit of rival software firm Wipro Ltd, and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), to bid for contracts within the country.
Customers in India, predominantly the government, opt for information technology (IT) vendors who implement projects and provide both hardware and software, unlike firms in the US and Europe, where they award contracts just for software services.

- Wipro Atlanta software unit to hire 500

IT Software and Hardware exports from Karnataka crossed the Rs.50,000 crore mark in 2006-07 to touch Rs 51,650 crore. In 2005-06 SW and HW exports from the state worked out to Rs 40,281 crore. According to final figures relesed by the Software Technology Parks of India Software exports grew by 30 per cent to touch Rs 48,700 crore in 2006-07 as against Rs 37,600 crore in the previous fiscal, while Hardware exports grew by ten per cent to earn Rs 2950 crore as against Rs 2481 crore acheived in 2005-06.

In its largest ever takeover to date, IT major Wipro today announced acquisition of Nasdaq listed Infocrossing, a US-based IT infrastructure management company in an all cash deal of 600 million Dollars. Announcing the acquisition Wipro Chief Financial Officer Suresh Senapathy told newspersons that the two companies had signed a definitive agreement for Wipro to acquire Infocrossing at 18.70 rpt 18.70 dollars per share. Software solutions developer Infosys Technologies Limited has said it will invest Rs 30 crore on expansion of its Chandigarh operations during the current fiscal. - Wipro in talks to buy US firm
Wipro Ltd, India's third-largest software services exporter, is in talks to acquire US technology services company Infocrossing Inc, CNTV18 television channel said on Friday, citing unnamed sources. The size of the deal is expected to be between $450 million and $500 million, it said. A spokesman for New York-listed Wipro said the company would not comment on market speculation.

Subex Azure Ltd, a leading vendor of OSS solutions for telecom operators, today announced a revenue of Rs 131.65 crore (32.42 million US Dollar) for the quarter ending 30 June, 2007 as against Rs 43.56 crore (10.73 million USD) in the corresponding period last fiscal. The revenue from products stood at Rs 100.4 million (24.73 mn USD) ,indicating a 377.33 per cent rise from Rs 21.03 crore (5.18 mn USD) in same period last year.
- Infy looks at more acquisitions: CFO
Despite sitting on a cash pile of over $1.6 billion, Infosys Technologies has been conservative as far as acquisitions are concerned. In contrast, its peers TCS and Wipro were happy doling out cash to buy firms across the world. On Wednesday, the IT behemoth somewhat broke out of that image. It acquired three captive BPO units of Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics, which other firms such as Genpact, Capgemini and Atos Origin were also reportedly eyeing. The buyout was a much-needed one for Infosys BPO. Once considered as one of India’s model BPO with 80% non-voice processes and margins of over 25.7% (September 2005), of late it has fallen from grace, with margins down to 17% (for June 2007).
- Infosys announces $250 mn BPO deal with Philips
In one of the largest ever Indian outsourcing deals, IT bellwether Infosys Technologies Ltd today announced inking of a 250 million US Dollar contract with the Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands. In a release here, Infosys said as part of the agreement, Philips would enter into a seven-year contract with the Infosys BPO for providing Finance and Accounting (F&A) services and processing of purchasing orders.

Rupee gradually approached the crucial 40-mark today, touching new nine-year high of 40.22 against the US currency in early trade by drawing strong support from pouring down portfolio investments into Indian equity. The Foreign investments crossed USD 10 billion so far in the currency year after a record single month inflow of USD 5.8 billion in July. In active trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the local currency resumed strong at 40.22/23 per dollar from overnight close of 40.28/29 a dollar but later was quoted at 40.2450/2550 a dollar in late morning deals.

The biggest work campus of tech giants Infosys and Wipro will soon be outside Bangalore, their home turf. Pune is set to overtake Bangalore as the largest single unit campus (SUC) for Infosys by 2008-end, while in the case of Wipro, it is Pune, Chennai or Hyderabad that may eclipse the headquarters in the next 2-3 years. Already, 70% Wipro’s employee billings are outside of Bangalore. The latest infrastructure data from Infosys shows that as of June 30, 2007, the company is looking at adding about 34,049 seats across a built-up area of 10.56 million sq ft in India and Mauritius in the near future. Out of this, 14,400 seats are based in Pune with a proposed built-up area of 2.7 million sq ft.

Infosys Technologies Ltd, India's second-largest computer-services provider, may well miss its first-quarter sales forecast in rupee terms, Bhuvnesh Singh and Sunil Tirumalai, analysts at Credit Suisse, said on Friday. Infosys may also reduce its forecast for earnings per share in rupee terms for the year ending March 31, Singh said in a note to clients today. Bangalore-based Infosys will be able to exceed and raise its forecast in US dollars, he said.

- Wipro suffers highest attrition rate
Despite offering better compensation package to its employees, IT bellwether Wipro is facing a high rate of attrition at 16.2 per cent during the last quarter of 2006-07 and 16.9 per cent on an annualised basis. The attrition rate in Wipro BPO was an astounding 48 per cent on an annualised basis, according to Wipro BPO Chief Executive T K Kurien. This was inspite of the BPO arm of Wipro being recognised among the Top BPO Providers for 2006 by the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP). Wipro Technologies was also recently rated as the top Indian outsourcing firm in the Global Outsourcing 100 rankings.

IT bellwether Infosys's may have faced no problem in compiling its annual results which it declared on Friday, but its plan to establish a 550-acre campus in Hyderabad has run into rough weather. The plan was touted by the AP government as a major success of its efforts to build Hyderabad as a major software destination rivalling Bangalore. But ironically, it is the failure of the administration to provide Infosys the 550 acres promised that has led to the setback.
