The Vittala Temple is known for its impressive architecture and is one of the most elegantly constructed temples in Hampi. The temple has gateway towers and compound walls which surround an enormous temple complex. Inside the temple complex there are a number of pavilions, halls and temples. Originally built in the 15th century A.D., subsequent rulers enhanced the architecture which brought about to its present form. Around the temple complex once existed a temple town by the name Vittalpura.
Access to the Vittala Temple is through the eastern gateway wherein the ticket counter is located. There are a series of compact platforms at the end of which is the Stone Chariot. This stone chariot is actually a small shrine which has been constructed in the form of a chariot. Originally an image of Garuda was enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum. The Stone Chariot gives an appearance of a monolithic structure but in reality this has been constructed using a number of concrete granite stones. The joints have been cleverly hidden by elegant architectural designs.
The temple is famous for the 56 musical pillars which emit tones when tapped.
