- Motor vehicle inspector held
Motor vehicle inspector Shankarappa, who had escaped prior to a Lok Ayukta raid at his house on November 3, was arrested on November 5 and has been remanded to police custody till November 9. He owned 24 acres of land in Bellary in his mother’s name, 35 acres in his wife’s name, a commercial complex in Basaweshwarnagar, and many sites.

Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde is shortly going to write to the Forest Department asking them to change the permit rules to check rampant illegal mining in the State. Justice Hegde has warned the Departments of Mines and Geology and Forest that if they do not check illegal mining in Karnataka, the State would soon be devoid of its mineral wealth.

The taluk panchayat executive officers should check the mismanagement that is rampant in the various departments of the taluk and take appropriate action to contain the same, demanded the taluk panchayat members, at the general meeting organised at the premises of the taluk panchayat office. Bukkapattana taluk panchayat member Manjunath enlightened the members about the mismanagement in the various departments of the taluk along with facts and figures. On listening to this the members in unison demanded that situation should be corrected with immediate effect.

Right from the entrance of the office till the chambers of the Lokayukta and the Upalokayukta, all public areas of the office situated in the Multi-storeyed building next to Vikas Soudha were being monitored through closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance system.

Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday said he will consult legal experts before taking any decision on the recommendation of Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde to remove two ministers Y Alkod Hanumanthappa and Sharanabasappa Darshanapur from the Cabinet. The Lokayukta had recommended the chief minister to remove the two ministers from the Cabinet for failing to submit their statements of assets and liabilities for the year 2005 to the Lokayukta within the prescribed date.

In his letter to commissioner for public instruction Madan Gopal on May 11, 2007, the Upa Lok Ayukta has taken exception to the department's decision to transfer P Asha Kumari, as assistant teacher at the government higher primary school, Cholanayakanahalli.
- 'Stung' Hubli traffic S-I suspended for accepting bribe
A traffic police inspector has been suspended after he was caught on camera during a "sting operation" carried out by a TV news channel recently. According to the police, traffic inspector Shivashanakar H Gadad was suspended a day after the video clipping that had purportedly shown him accepting Rs 1,000 from a manganese transporter reportedly to ply the truck via Hubli.

CHESCOM Assistant Engineer was caught red hand by Lokayukta sleuths while accepting bribe for showing official favour. Lokayukta sources said that Srinivas was caught red handed while accepting Rs 5,000 as a bribe to install transformer from Capt. Madappa of Hulugunda near Siddapur yesterday.

With the winding up the Justice U L Bhat Commission, the State government on Thursday decided to order an inquiry by the Lokayukta into the alleged irregularities in the mining sector and the Rs 150-crore bribery charges against Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and some of his cabinet colleagues.

Lokayukta police trapped officials taking bribes, in two separate incidents in Hospet and Bijapur. An Second Division Assistant in the Minor Irrigation Sub-Division at Hadagali of Hospet taluk was arrested by the Lokayukta police on December 29. Acting on a complaint by a farmer, Chennabasappa Bada Bheemappanavar of Holeittige village, the police laid a trap and arrested Mahendra while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,300 from the farmer.

The Lokayukta, Chitradurga, has arrested the Secretary of Madakaripura Gram Panchayat, Chitradurga taluk, G N Chennappa for demanding and accepting a bribe from one Mr T Anjanappa, son of Thippeswamy and a resident of Madakaripura. The Lokayukta police had acted on a complaint filed by Mr Anjanappa.

A doctor, attached to the district hospital here, was today caught red handed by the Lok Ayukta officials while accepting a bribe for operating on a patient. The doctor, M C Vijapure, demanded Rs 10,000 from a poor patient for an operation, stating that it would cost more than Rs 40,000 in private hospitals.

On his last day in office, Lokayukta Justice N Venkatachala on Friday was swamped by visitors. Justice Venkatachala was seen signing and clearing all files at his office throughout the day. At the same time he also redressed some of the grievances of the public who had come to his office. He directed the authorities concerned to attend to their memorandums. The Lokayukta had become so busy that he had his lunch at 5.15 pm.

- BDA engineer, cops trapped
An assistant subinspector, a constable and a BDA engineer were on Thursday trapped in separate incidents by Lok Ayukta sleuths while accepting bribe. In the first case, assistant engineer of BDA in Banashankari, G D Jayaram, was caught when he was accepting Rs 20,000 from Anand, a landlord. The BDA had recently notified lands belonging to Anand's father in Kathriguppe.
