- 5-day week can save govt Rs 960 cr
Rs 960 crore per annum. That's the estimated savings if state government offices across Karnataka switch over to a five-day week. And that savings could be used to construct 30 flyovers, each estimated at Rs 32 crore. The estimate was arrived at by the authorities based on three factors: average annual spending on office overheads, a comparison with the percentage saving recorded in 1983 when the five-day week was introduced for a few months and an estimated saving prepared as part of the budget proposals of 2002-03.

e-governance is a must but not without safeguards. “Even in e-governance data can be manipulated. Government is planning to introduce digital certificate (signature) to the government employees who are in charge of maintaining the records under the Bhoomi project,” said Rajiv Chawla, director, Survey Settlement & Land Records, Government of Karnataka.
- Karnataka to spend 50 cr on Kanakadasa birthplace
The Karnataka Government will spend Rs 50 crore in the next decade to ensure overall development of Bada Village and Kaginele where saint Kanakadasa was born and brought up and its surrounding historical places. Talking to newspersons here, Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur and Water Resources Minister K S Eswarappa said the Kaginele Development Authority, headed by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, held its first meeting on August 24 and decided to take up work on road links, main entrance and construction of a temple near the saint's memorial and also a research centre. - Foreign Registration Office staff fear rain

- Sanitation project to boost hygiene
Hygiene and sanitation in the backward district of Chamarajanagara in Karnataka will get a boost when lavatory facilities will be provided to 1.37 lakh below poverty line (BPL) households under the Total Sanitation Campaign project. The main aim of the Centrally-sponsored project, expected to be completed by 2009, was to eliminate open defecation and impart lessons in hygiene. It envisaged strong emphasis on information, education and communication to increase people's awareness on sanitary practices, health issues and usage of safe drinking water. - Karnataka Cabinet expanded; 5 new members
Karnataka Cabinet was expanded today with induction of five legislators into the Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition Ministry. Governor T N Chaturvedi administered oath of secrecy to Mr G T Devegowda, Mahadeva Prasad, R Srinivas (all JD-S), S Shivanna, Appasaheb Mallappa Pattanshetty (all BJP) at a simple ceremony held in Banquet Hall in Raj Bhavan.
- Bangalore Cyber crime lab to open in November 2006
The Nasscom supported cyber crime lab will open in the first week of November in Bangalore. Speaking to CyberMedia News, Sanjay Vir Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Economic Offenses, Corp of Detectives (COD), Bangalore, said that the lab will be a public-private partnership initiative.
